Participant Guide
Thank you for taking part in a research session. This page explains, in plain terms, what to expect, what is recorded, and how your data is handled.
Overview
During a session you complete a short lesson on a computer. A small setup step may run first so the recording equipment can check that everything is working. The whole session typically takes only a few minutes.
What to expect
- You will be asked to answer a series of questions, just like a normal lesson.
- Before any recording, a brief setup routine runs so the equipment can confirm it is ready.
- You may be asked to wear a small consumer device (such as a lightweight headband) if the study uses physiological recording.
- You can stop at any time. Tell the study staff if you would like to end the session.
Calibration
Calibration is a short routine that confirms the device is connected and reading clearly. You may be asked to relax for a moment or perform a few simple actions, such as blinking. It is not a test, and there are no right or wrong answers. If anything is uncomfortable, adjust the device or let study staff know.
What is recorded
Depending on the study, the session may record:
- Your answers and how long they take.
- How you interact with the lesson, such as pointing-device movements.
- Optional physiological signals, such as scalp-level electrical activity from a small headband, if the study uses them and you have agreed.
- Optional device-based measurements. Some studies use a small camera to estimate where you are looking and basic face/head motion. These are processed instantly into numbers; no video images are stored or leave the device.
No audio is recorded, and no video or identifying photographs are stored. Any camera used produces only derived measurements (for example, gaze direction), never a stored image of you.
Devices
If your study uses a wearable device, study staff will help you put it on and check that it fits comfortably. The device is a standard consumer product and is cleaned between participants. You do not need any equipment of your own.
Before the session starts, the lesson will ask your permission for each device it wants to use. You can allow or decline each one individually, and declining simply means that device is not used.
Privacy
- Your data is separated from your name and identity before it is analyzed.
- Data is stored securely and only the study team can access it.
- It is used only for the research study you agreed to, and is not sold or shared for marketing.
- You may withdraw your participation at any time. Study staff can tell you how.
Troubleshooting
If anything does not work as expected during your session, do not worry. Tell the study staff what happened; they can restart the lesson or adjust the equipment. Most issues are resolved in under a minute.
